What does a DTF transfer cost when you print it yourself?

Put in what your supplier charges, the printer quote you have, and the hours someone will spend keeping it running. You get the cost of each usable transfer, the monthly volume where owning starts to pay, and where the money goes.

The starting values are an example, not an average. Misprints count against printing in-house.

How the calculation works

Here is what the calculator does with your numbers, so you can check it against your own spreadsheet.

Monthly fixed costs

These are the same whether you print 100 transfers or 4,000: the setup price plus one-off room costs, divided by your pay-off period; the service plan; and maintenance hours multiplied by your hourly labor cost.

Cost of each print

Ink, film and powder per print, plus $0.18 for handling: loading film, trimming and checking each print. Because some prints fail, you print more than you sell: with 10% misprints, 900 usable transfers means 1,000 prints.

Cost per usable transfer

Fixed costs plus print costs for the month, divided by the transfers you can actually use. Compare that with the delivered price your supplier charges.

Break-even volume

The number of transfers a month at which owning and ordering cost the same. Below it, every month you own the printer costs you more than ordering would have. If each print costs more than you pay your supplier, there is no break-even.

What to do with the result

  • If you are well below break-even, keep ordering and put the effort into a reliable second supplier.
  • If you are close to it, cost alone won’t decide. Turnaround, control over quality and who will do the daily maintenance matter more.
  • If you are well above it, the saving is real. Choose a setup on support and parts availability, not print speed.
