Why this site exists
Most of what you read about buying a DTF printer is written by people who sell DTF printers. Their break-even calculators tend to leave out the parts of ownership that don’t sell machines: daily white-ink maintenance, misprints, fume extraction, waiting for parts, and the hours someone in your shop gives up to keep it running.
Print Systems Lab is for owners of small US apparel businesses (t-shirt shops, screen printers adding DTF, online sellers, embroidery and promo shops) who already buy ready-to-press transfers and want to know, with their own numbers, whether bringing printing in-house would actually save money.
Where the numbers come from
The calculator and the homepage comparison use one simple cost model, explained step by step on the calculator page. Every input can be changed, and you should change them: the starting values (for example $3.10 per ordered transfer and a $24,000 setup) are an illustration, not an average of the market.
Price ranges for equipment and setup types are typical US ranges drawn from published seller prices and industry guides. They are estimates, not quotes. We say so wherever they appear, and we haven’t yet reviewed individual brands or models.
How we make money
Some links to sellers and suppliers may be affiliate links. If you buy through one, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Commissions don’t decide what we recommend: a setup is rated on support, parts and running cost, and we will tell you to keep ordering transfers when that is the cheaper option, which earns us nothing.
We don’t accept payment for placements or rankings. The full details are in our affiliate disclosure.
Corrections
If a price, a fact or a piece of the calculation is wrong, we want to know. Corrections are made on the page and noted with the date.

A note on safety
We cover fume extraction because heating DTF powder can release harmful vapor. We are not safety professionals. Follow the manufacturer’s safety data sheet and your local workplace and building rules. See our disclaimer.
